Neuroendocrine Control of Breathing.
The laboratory of Serdia O. Mack, Ph.D., focuses on the role of the endocrine system in modulating how we breathe in response to physiologic stress. We are looking at major neuronal pathways in the hypothalamus of the brain that control both the endocrine system and food intake, and how these neuronal circuits regulate respiratory drive and blood pressure. Our laboratory uses neuroanatomical tracings, imaging modalities and integrative physiological techniques to map hypothalamic pathways and to identify the neurotransmitters that are involved in regulating respiratory patterns in normal and obesity-related disease states. We are also interested in examining the capacity of the hypothalamic neurons and neural networks to change their connections and behavior in response to chronic stress. Our research is expected to serve as a basis for understanding and designing new evidence-based therapeutic strategies that can reduce or alleviate severe cardiopulmonary consequences of respiratory disorders.
